Spring High-Water River Runs
Experience Northern Ontario's Rivers at Their Wildest
Spring brings a completely different kind of adventure to the Madawaska and South Algonquin region. As the snow melts and water levels rise, the rivers come alive with fast-moving water, rapids, and whitewater, creating exciting opportunities for experienced paddlers.
For those who enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and whitewater, spring is an opportunity to experience the region from a completely different perspective.
Rather than simply paddling a lake, you can organize a point-to-point river adventure, have your group and equipment dropped off at the starting point, and let the river carry you downstream.
Madawaska River – Whitney to Bark Lake
One option is to arrange a drop-off on the Madawaska River in Whitney, load up your canoes or kayaks, and begin your journey downstream.
With the higher spring water levels, sections of the river can provide exciting moving water and rapids as you travel through the wilderness toward Bark Lake.
The river journey allows you to experience the forests, rocky Canadian Shield, rapids, and waterways that connect this part of Northern Ontario.
With some planning, transportation can be arranged so that your group, canoes, paddles, camping equipment, and other gear are dropped off at the starting point. You then make your way downstream, eventually reaching the upper end of Bark Lake.
Opeongo River – Algonquin Park to Bark Lake
For an even longer adventure, experienced paddlers can explore a route beginning in Algonquin Provincial Park.
One option is to arrange a drop-off at Shall Lake in Algonquin Park and begin paddling the Opeongo River system.
From there, the route takes you through Victoria Lake and along the Opeongo River, following the water downstream through the wilderness before eventually reaching Bark Lake.
This type of trip allows you to experience a remarkable variety of Northern Ontario scenery in a single adventure—from the lakes and forests of
Algonquin Park to the moving water and rapids of the river system, eventually finishing at Bark Lake.
For experienced paddlers, the journey itself becomes the destination.
Plan Your Own Spring River Adventure
The great thing about these trips is that you can organize them around your own group and equipment.
Bring your:
- Canoes or kayaks
- Paddles
- PFDs
- Dry bags
- Lunch and snacks
- Water
- Safety equipment
- Camping equipment if planning a longer trip
Arrange transportation to your chosen starting point, have your canoes and gear dropped off, and begin your journey downstream.
Depending on the route, water conditions, and your group's experience, you can spend the day travelling through lakes, rapids, rivers, and remote wilderness before finishing at the upper end of Bark Lake.
Once you reach Bark Lake, the character of the trip changes again. The fast-moving river gives way to the larger, calmer waters of the lake, providing a rewarding finish to your journey.
Spring Water Means Adventure
Spring high water can make these rivers significantly more dynamic than they are later in the year. The increased flow can create exciting rapids and whitewater, but it also means that conditions can change quickly.
These adventures are intended for experienced paddlers who are comfortable navigating moving water and whitewater.
Always check current water levels, weather, river conditions, access restrictions, and applicable regulations before setting out. Wear a properly fitted PFD and carry appropriate safety and rescue equipment for the conditions.
